Friend's Suicide Prompts Vicar to Help Men with Depression ; Launch of Mandown Counselling websiteHelp to Recognise Signs and Offer Support

AVICAR whose friend took his own life is on a mission to stop men committing suicide.

Jerry Sutton, of St Margaret's Church, in Altrincham, and St Mark's, in Dunham Massey, was shocked when a close friend killed himself 18 months ago.

In the wake of the tragedy he noticed he was conducting more and more funerals for men who had committed suicide, as well as counselling those left behind.

The father-of-four, who is also chair of governors of Altrincham School and chaplain of the Parachute Regiment, has now found another calling - counselling men in desperate situations.

The 53-year-old has launched a new online initiative Mandown to 'empower and enable ordinary people' to recognise signs of depression in men and offer support.

He explained: "I didn't want to do something that replicates what the Samaritans do.

"I wanted to set something up that heightens awareness.

"I started to do a bit of research and there's some horrendous figures - one man commits suicide every 90 minutes and men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women. …
