I AM sadly old enough to remember Manchester council's boast of 'Defending Jobs, Protecting Services.' .

How times have changed!

The justification for privatising the bin and street cleaning services seems to be that the service will improve.

Perhaps complaints about the service have increased recently, but perhaps that is due to the staffing levels being cut by almost two thirds.

During recent rounds of voluntary redundancy, no preference was given to protecting front line services, no limits were put on restricting personnel from leaving and, as a result, there is now a top heavy structure with manager to staff ratio being out of kilter.

All of these issues lead to a poorer service. Cut staff, fewer people to do the job, more work to do equals a diminished service.

It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and hey presto the ideal rationale to privatise.

And what about the staff, ordinary men and women who have not had a pay rise in many years.

What will happen to their terms and conditions? …
