Unmanned United! Drone Pictures of New Stadium

THESE are the first 'fan's eye' pictures of FC United's new stadium - and they have been taken with a drone.

Photographer Derek Hazlehurst snapped the ground, which is beginning to emerge out of the rubble at Ronald Johnson playing fields, Moston, using a DJI Phantom 2 vision model of the flying robot. He flew the unmanned miniature plane, which has a 14- megapixel camera mounted on it, up to heights of around 80ft to capture what it might look like from the stands at the 5,000- capacity stadium when it is completed in the summer.

Flying robot drones are notoriously used by the American military in Afghanistan, but also have a host of civilian uses and are increasingly popular among miniature plane and photography enthusiasts.

Derek, 54, an engineer who works for M.E.N. Media at our Chadderton HQ, was flying his drone in Heaton Park when FC United member Richard Searle approached him about taking some pictures of the Pounds 5.5m ground. Richard said: "We are working on a documentary about the building of the ground and the club, so when I saw Derek, I thought I would cheekily ask him if he fancied tak-k ing some photos of the ground being built. …
