Man Battered Cat with Mop Handle ; Horrified Passers-By Pleaded with Him to Stop Attack

A MAN launched an attack on a defenceless cat after it made a mess in his house, a court heard.

Jewel Ahmed, 35, kicked and hit the animal with a stick, said to be a mop handle, as residents and passers-by pleaded with him to stop.

He is said to have told the horrified onlookers 'I don't care, it's not my cat.' The animal survived the ordeal, however Ahmed was arrested shortly afterwards.

In a police interview, he said it had defecated on the stairs of his house on Blandford Street in Ashton-under-Lyne and that he was trying to move it away.

Ahmed was first seen poking the black and white cat with the stick in the back yard of a neighbour's house, at around 11.30am on November 12 last year, magistrates were told.

Joanne Sowter, giving evidence, said she heard the cat screeching and looked out of her kitchen window to see it cowering against a wall as Ahmed poked and hit it with the stick which police later found in his living room.

The incident then continued in the street where Ahmed was seen kicking the animal 'three or four times' by passing motorist Caroline Edwards. …
