A PROTEST group backed by former Happy Monday dancer Bez, is to defy a ban and stage a demonstration party on town hall lawns.

Council bosses have warned the group they will be liable if any damage is caused to the lawns or injury to anyone attending.

The 'Rally on the Lawn' event is to take place from noon on Saturday outside Swinton Civic Centre as a demonstration against Salford council making deep cuts in its services.

In February the council approved savings of Pounds 25m and 300 jobs are being shed.

Bez will join Shinny - lead singer from Salford band Hanky Park, plus local singer Keelan McNally.

There will also be stalls selling food and jewellery. Organisers say cash raised will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support and a local junior football team.

The council says traders must have a council licence and the access road outside the town hall must be kept clear.

It points out the organisers need Pounds 5m in public liability insurance for the event. …
