OZARK | Shelton State defeated Wallace State 4-1 Friday in the championship game of the Alabama Community College Conference/ Region 22 tournament, earning a berth in the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., next week.

Shelton State broke a 1-1 in the eighth with a three-run outburst off Wallace State ace Bret Marks, who entered in relief in the seventh and was pitching for the second time in less than 24 hours.

"I thought our kids played under control and played like we always do -- great defense, solid pitching and some big hits," Buccaneers coach Bobby Sprowl said. "We didn't give anything away."

Tournament MVP Terrance Dederick delivered the go-ahead RBI in the eighth for Shelton State, punching a run-scoring double to right field off Marks. Shelton State added two more runs in the inning and Dederick earned the save for the Bucs, recording two outs in the ninth in relief of Alex Milazzo.

Milazzo pitched 81/3 solid innings for Shelton State and allowed one run on five hits, while striking out nine. …
