UWA Expanding Its Weight Room

LIVINGSTON | The University of West Alabama will soon double the size of its weight room facilities and enhance its athletic training program.

The college's board of trustees voted unanimously Monday to allocate $1.5 million from a bond that was previously issued for other construction projects around campus. The majority of the money will go to the Homer Fieldhouse expansion, while about $225,000 will fund new flooring and bleachers for the school's gymnasium.

"We needed to do this for the continued growth of our campus and our athletic programs," said Terry Bunn, finance committee chairman. "Those facilities are too small, and expanding it will help all of our sports teams."

UWA has more than 325 athletes in 14 sports. The current 1,056- square-foot weight room does not provide enough space for student- athletes to work out, athletic director Stan Williamson said. The planned 2,800-square-foot expansion will more than double the number of students in the weight room at any given time, as well as open up some time slots. …
