Globe to Reopen as Carmelo Closes Its Doors

Carmelo Cafe, 405 23rd Ave. has closed its doors, but a phoenix will rise from its ashes: Chef Jeff Wilson plans to open a new version of The Globe Restaurant in that Temerson Square spot, which was also formerly Jalapeno's.

Patrons of Carmelo hoping for its upscale meat-and-three lunches were greeted by darkened doors and a dimmed "Open" sign in recent days. Its outside chalkboard, which listed daily specials, had been wiped clean. A call to the restaurant's number Tuesday said the listing had been disconnected. Owner Jason Williams said the restaurant actually closed its doors Wednesday, although he let employees know a week before.

"I loved the restaurant," Williams said, "but it just wasn't the right time for us to grow. We had a great, loyal customer base."

Wilson owned and operated The Globe in downtown Northport for 17 years before falling victim to the economic downtown in 2009. He'd originally wanted to open his restaurant, which featured Wilson's own creations, a mix of Southern, French and other cuisines, in downtown Tuscaloosa. …
