TUSCALOOSA | Harry Lee, the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education incumbent for District 5, said he's running for re-election to finish the work that the current board started four years ago.

"I'm running because of the tremendous programs that we have started in the past two years," Lee said. "They've really taken off and showed tremendous improvement. We still have plans for other things that haven't been introduced yet that are going to improve our system even greater.

"I want to be here to see the completion of all of them," he said. "We will never be finished with our work because school systems need to develop all the time. We want to be a greater system than we are now."

Lee, an 81-year-old Birmingham native, said the current board's greatest accomplishment was hiring Superintendent Paul McKendrick.

"Dr. McKendrick has brought the problems (of the school system) to our attention," he said. "He's the ultimate professional. Another of our greatest accomplishments is us being in agreement with McKendrick, which is contrary to what the postcards being sent out and the ad that was in the paper have been saying. …
