Northport Recognizes Community Leaders, Including Citizen of the Year Earl Mitchell

Earl Mitchell, manager of Sunset Funeral Home, was named the 2013 Northport Citizen of the Year on Tuesday evening.

Mitchell was cited for the compassion he has shown in his profession over many years and for his work in community organizations including the Jaycees, local schools, Warrior Baseball at Kentuck Park, Black Warrior Boy Scouts, the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and Five Points Baptist Church.

He was one of several Northport residents recognized at the annual awards banquet at Five Points Baptist Church.

Also receiving awards were:

- Lucy Sellers, principal at Northport Elementary School, who was named Educator of the Year and was cited for a strong work ethic and setting a Christian example.

- Benny Ormond Chappell, who was named Northport Historian/ Pioneer of the Year and was cited for his renovation and preservation efforts.

- Sgt. Heath Smitherman of the Northport Police Department, who was named Public Safety Leader of the Year for a second time. …
