Scarbrough Adjusting Well to Life at IMG Academy

In one sense, he's a fish out of water: a country boy from the Black Belt thrust into the west coast of Florida and its sugar-sand beaches.

His Southern accent doesn't blend in as well as it once did, but he's OK with that.

In another sense, he's right where he belongs: an elite athlete at a place that trains some of the country's best.

His power and speed fit right in there, and he sure is fine with that.

When Bo Scarbrough transferred from Tuscaloosa County High School to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., it captured a lot of attention, and rightfully so. It was a peculiar move, the best pure athlete in the state moving during the summer to a first-year program for his senior season.

But listening to Scarbrough, a 233-pound, muscle-bound blur of a running back, it could have been the best move for him.

Scarbrough knows next year he'll be off at school, and when his clothes need to be washed or he finds himself hungry, he'll be on his own. His new surroundings have helped him focus on taking care of himself.

"It's actually been pretty good for me," Scarbrough said. "The thing I like about it is, you're on your own. You really can see how it is getting away from your mama, like when you go away to college. That's what I see. I think I done come a long way from getting away from my mama."

IMG is 8-1 this season after an overtime win Halloween night, but Scarbrough didn't play after banging knees with a teammate during practice last week. The Ascenders have just one game remaining, and it's unknown if he'll play.

Still, he's had a successful season by any measure, but especially so for a first-year program. He has 1,118 rushing yards on 108 carries and 16 touchdowns, and has added 131 yards and three touchdowns on 10 receptions.

All in all, he's made the transition seem pretty simple.

"It's been pretty easy, you know," Scarbrough said. "I just step back and I watch and observe to see how everything went. So I just kind of weaved myself up in there to fit perfect at IMG. …
