Alabama Credit Union Receives Social Responsibility Award for Third Consecutive Year

Alabama Credit Union has received its third consecutive Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility from the Credit Union National Association in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes the Tuscaloosa-based credit union's Secret Meals For Hungry Children program, which provides more than 2,000 elementary school students from low-income families with nutritious meals on weekends.

"We started in 2008, feeding 18 kids in the Tuscaloosa area," said Kelley Porter, marketing manager of Alabama Credit Union.

"Now, thanks to our employees, members and the community at large, we raise approximately $240,000 per year, and every penny of that goes to buy food packs for 2,000 kids across Alabama that educators have identified as failing to learn due to lack of nutrition."

At a recent credit union marketing conference in Orlando, Fla., Alabama Credit Union won the CUNA Diamond Award of Excellence for its Secret Meals program in the Best Community Involvement category. …
