EDITORIAL: Congressman Made Right Call to Step Out

Shame isn't very popular in the 21st century. Stigmatizing people for their failings is considered a little too harsh by most. And if that means there is little incentive to abide by moral practices that are desirable for society in general and that spawns social ills that tear at society's fabric, so be it.

Judgmental is out.

But there seems to be yet a hint of shame over in Louisiana's 5th Congressional District. Rep. Vance McAllister, caught on film smooching with a married woman who isn't his wife, won't be running for re-election. In a day where politicians trot their wives and children out on stage to stand by them in the face of charges of infidelity in hopes of saving their careers, that's refreshing.

McAllister, a conservative Republican, campaigned on the promise to "defend our Christian way of life." News flash, if someone trying to sell you something -- and that's what a campaigning politician is trying to do -- goes out of his or her way to mention Jesus, grab your wallet and hold onto it tightly. …
