Region's gas prices jump 6.9 cents in a week

Gasoline prices in Western Pennsylvania rose 6.9 cents a gallon over the last week, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge report issued Tuesday. The average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.370, up from $3.301. Drivers in Du Bois could find the lowest prices with an average of $3.257. Erie had the highest average price of $3.456 and drivers in Pittsburgh were paying $3.363.

Downtown rooming house draws consumer alert

The Allegheny County Health Department posted a consumer alert Dec. 29 at the Wood Street Commons kitchen on Third Avenue, Downtown, because of a roach infestation. An inspector found numerous roaches in the rooming house's kitchen and dining area and roach droppings throughout the kitchen, according to the inspection report. RE2 Inc. wins $730,000 Army contract for robots

RE2 Inc., a Lawrenceville-based robotics company, has won an Army Small Business Innovation Research contract to help develop greater dexterity for robotic devices used to disarm bombs. The $730,000 contract extends over two years.

Direct Energy acquires Vectren for $39 million

Direct Energy has acquired Vectren Source for about $39 million in cash. Vectren is an Indiana company that supplies natural gas to about 280,000 residential and small business customers in Ohio, Indiana and New York. Direct Energy is a subsidiary of Centrica plc of the United Kingdom.

Clover Hill Foods acquires assets of Ohio distributor

Clover Hill Foods, of Bridgeville, has acquired certain assets of Steubenville Fruit Co., an Ohio-based foodservice distributor. Financial terms were not disclosed. Steubenville Fruit, founded in 1942 as a wholesaler of fresh fruits and produce, had become a broadline food distributor. Its president, Mark Longo, has joined Clover Hill Foods, which claims to serve more than 1,200 customer locations. Clover Hill Foods is a foodservice subsidiary of Behrhorst and Crawford. …
