Aliquippa Library Gets Preservation Grant

The B. F. Jones Memorial Library in Aliquippa is getting a $5,650 Preservation Assistance Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant will enable the library to hire a consultant to conduct a preservation assessment of its collection of newspaper clippings, photographs, yearbooks and steel industry documents.

"Aliquippa was a company town" and the library at 663 Franklin Ave. was built to honor Benjamin Franklin Jones of Jones & Laughlin Steel, said library director Linda Helms.

The Italian Renaissance-style building with a grey limestone facade was built in 1929 by a daughter of Mr. Jones, Ms. Helms said. "It has been beautifully preserved," she said, noting that the library is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ms. Helms said the artifacts and documents are in locked bookcases. …
