Healthy food drive

VA Butler Healthcare is accepting donations of nonperishable food this month for distribution next month to homeless veterans as part of its Health Promotion & Disease Prevention program.

Items are being accepted through Jan. 31 in rooms 215ES, 226W, 427W and the primary care entrance of VA Butler Healthcare, 325 New Castle Road.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. OBSERVANCES

Unity breakfast, service projects planned

"Honoring Diversity in Our Community" is the theme of the 12th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. unity breakfast, sponsored by the North Hills Unity Breakfast Committee at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the Zappala Student Center at La Roche College, 9000 Babcock Blvd.

Dr. Marcus Rediker, professor of Atlantic history at the University of Pittsburgh will deliver the keynote address. The Indian Cultural Association of Pittsburgh will receive the Spirit of Unity Award. The cost of the breakfast is $18 for adults and $9 for students. Information: 412-487-6316, option 2, ext. 3209.

* North Hills Community Outreach will facilitate several service projects geared toward helping senior citizens in honor of Dr. King and his legacy of service.

Duquesne Light employees will conduct home safety checks for senior citizens in the area. In addition to checking for safety hazards, volunteers can install smoke alarms, nightlights, bathtub mats and flashlights.

FedEx employees are teaming up with teenagers to visit senior citizens living in apartment complexes in Blawnox.

Kittanning Street restrictions

Motorists will encounter short-term, single-lane alternating traffic patterns from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through Jan. 20 on Kittanning Street.

Crews will stabilize shoulder areas between Route 8 and Sharps Hill Road. Motorists should expect delays when driving through the area.
