The Flecktones Return to the Core

For local fans of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, patience finally will pay off on Monday night.

The original lineup -- banjoist Fleck, bassist Victor Wooten and drummer Roy "Future Man" Wooten and harmonica player Howard Levy -- which was together from 1988-92, re-formed in 2010 and was booked to play with Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers last summer.

When that concert was canceled, the Noisemakers returned a month later while the Flecktones stretched out the wait for seven months.

Since forming to play for a PBS series, the bluegrass/jazz fusion band has persevered with the core of Mr. Fleck and the Wooten brothers. When Mr. Levy left after "UFO Tofu," it carried on by adding special guests until saxophonist Jeff Coffin joined full time in 1997. He stayed through a half-dozen albums until 2008, when he was enlisted by the Dave Matthews Band after the death of LeRoi Moore.

The Flecktones were thinking it was time for a change anyway.
