The township may post signs at the entrances to its walking trails, warning hikers about ticks.

Commissioner David Mikec said Monday that, despite using a lot of insect repellent, his wife's jacket was covered in ticks.

Four varieties of ticks are in the township and are carried by deer, raccoons, foxes and groundhogs, Mr. Mikec said.

"Long periods of time with below freezing temperatures kill off ticks," he said. "Unfortunately, that didn't happen this winter."

The National Pest Management Association has issued an early warning of ticks, possibly carrying Lyme disease, lurking in backyards.

* Commissioners approved a resolution setting 2012 salaries for nonunion employees, including manager Wayne Jones, $90,786; engineer Art Gazdik, $85,400; recreation director Pete Geis, $52,452; and police chief Robert Bellan, $100,503.
