New use likely for Good Shepherd School

The Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese announced last week that it would consolidate several schools in the region, including Good Shepherd School in Braddock, Word of God School in Swissvale and St. Maurice School in Forest Hills.

Braddock Mayor John Fetterman said he's "sad to see them leave," but he said a new purpose that would benefit the borough likely will be found for the building.

The building's indoor basketball court would be ideal for a basketball league, and agencies such as Heritage Community Initiatives might seek space in the building, Mr. Fetterman said.

The three schools will merge next school year at the St. Maurice site and be called East Catholic.

Propel is looking for 125 volunteers to help build the playground on April 27. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The district's current three-year contract with the teachers' union will expire June 30. School board President Gerri McCullough said Monday negotiations for a new contract are going well.
