Train Day Down Track in Rockwood

Article excerpt

Rockwood, a major trail town along the Great Allegheny Passage in Somerset County and a community with a rich railroad history, will celebrate Amtrak's National Train Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 12.

There will be displays of early railroad artifacts, model trains, a 42-foot-long inflatable crawl-through train, prize raffles, children's games, arts and crafts and food -- everything from burgers, beans and hot dogs to haluski, pizza and roast beef sandwiches.

There also will be free interpretive family bike rides along the passage. The Rockwood Bike Shop will provide loaner bikes.

A 45-minute Wild World of Animals Show will feature 14 different wild animals. The Rockwood Rotary is sponsoring a "tamer" version in the form of a stuffed animal game booth.

Live entertainment will be provided by The Rockolas, Tina Marie, the Take Two Variety Band featuring Russ and Donna Miller, and Twentieth Century Magic by magician Gary Weimer.

The event, organized by the Rockwood Area Merchants Association, also will remind visitors of its years-long efforts to convince Amtrak to approve a passenger station for the town.

A WQED-TV crew is scheduled to shoot footage from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday of the Big Savage Tunnel and the Keystone and Salisbury viaducts on the Great Allegheny Passage in southern Somerset County.

Supervising producer David Solomon is looking for volunteer cyclists to pedal across the viaducts on cue via cell phone. He can be reached at 412-622-1532 and
