No Shame in Loss Friday

Article excerpt

DETROIT -- For those who think the Pirates should be embarrassed after nearly being no-hit Friday by Justin Verlander, manager Clint Hurdle has a message.

"There's no shame in what happened to us last night," he said Saturday. "For anybody who thinks there is shame in the events of last night, I think that's a little misguided."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland concurred: "That's probably the best game I've ever seen pitched. And I've seen a lot of games."

In the Pirates' 26th at-bat of the game, Josh Harrison singled up the middle to keep Verlander from becoming the sixth pitcher in major league history to record at least three no-hitters.

The fact that Verlander already has two, Hurdle said, is further reason the Pirates are not embarrassed by their offensive output Friday.

"You look at the individual on the mound, he's got a couple of them in the bag already," Hurdle said. "That's what creates greatness in the game ... being good for a long time. He's been good for a long time and he has that skill set that you don't see. You might see a couple of them in a generation."

Verlander threw his first no-hitter June 12, 2007, against Milwaukee. His second came May 11 last year against Toronto.

"When Verlander's off, he's still great," Garrett Jones said. "But, when he's on, he's on another level."

The good news is that, should the Tigers maintain their pitching schedule the next month, the Pirates will not face Verlander when Detroit visits PNC Park in June.

"We live in an industry ... we throw the word 'great' around like a nickel, and the society does the same thing," Hurdle said. "But there is greatness attached to that guy when it comes to pitching."

Harrison confident and hot

After breaking up Verlander's no-hitter, Harrison joked a few fans might want to kill him. That fear -- real or humorous -- did not stop Harrison from walking from the hotel to Comerica Park Saturday afternoon. …
