Pitt cut an early four-run deficit to one run with two runs in the seventh only to have Louisville score four in the eighth in an 8- 4 loss in the first round of the Big East Conference baseball tournament in Clearwater, Fla., Wednesday.

Shortstop Alex Chittenden went 4 for 4 and scored two runs as top- seeded Louisville (39-18) advanced to face the winner of Wednesday's final first-round game between Connecticut and South Florida. The Panthers play the Connecticut/USF loser at 5 p.m. today.

Trailing 4-0, Pitt scored in the top of the fifth when catcher Elvin Soto led off the inning with a home run to right field.

Stephen Vranka went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for No. 8 seed Pitt (28- 27), and Soto was 3 for 4. Matt Iannazzo took the loss, falling to 7- 4 after he allowed five runs and 12 hits in seven innings.

Top-seeded John Isner had 13 aces on his way to a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) win against Belgium's Xavier Malisse at the Open de Nice in France. The hard-serving American will play Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals after the Russian topped seventh-seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

* The Czech Republic closed out a 3-0 victory against the United States in Duesseldorf, Germany, as Frantisek Cermak and Radek Stepanek defeated Andy Roddick and Ryan Harrison, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 10- 8 in the doubles at the Team World Cup.

* Alison Riske of Peters Township lost to Maria Elena Camerin, 7- 5, 6-4, in the first round of a French Open qualifier in Paris.
