In response to the May 28 article "Lawmaker's Plan to Hasten Pa. DEP Permits Raises Eyebrows": Once again legislators are being lobbied by industry to strong-arm the state Department of Environmental Protection to facilitate permit reviews and circumvent existing environmental guidelines and regulations. Current legislation and subsequent DEP regulations already make the permitting process "standardized" to facilitate the permit review process as well as protect our environment and quality of life. So I can only guess the mining industry is green with envy because it believes the gas and oil industry got one up on it in Harrisburg.

Currently, coal mining is a given where a coal seam still exists in the commonwealth, but as we have experienced before, the mining of coal will be short-lived. It is only with thoughtful regulatory environmental review by DEP that we have a chance, albeit small, of protecting our natural environment and the future of our communities. …
