Insurance Agent Highmark's New CEO Looks Qualified for Battle

It never left my mind that these are two rather large nonprofits that seem to have lost their focus on the service to the community ... and it's one of the reasons that I continue to tell both sides, if you don't fix this, we will in Harrisburg.

That was Gov. Tom Corbett -- not last year or last month, but last weekend -- on "KD/PG Sunday Edition," reminding UPMC and Highmark that much still needs to be done to secure a long-term contract between them.

His exhortation comes at an opportune time, with the hiring of William Winkenwerder Jr. as CEO of Highmark, the region's dominant health insurer, which has been locked in battle with UPMC, the region's dominant health network, on maintaining UPMC services for 3 million Highmark customers. The insurer's in-network, preferred- rate access will expire at the end of 2014.

Highmark, which is seeking to partner with West Penn Allegheny Health System, has consistently sought a new long-term agreement with UPMC. …
