Judge John Cleland sat directly next to Amy Farkas, questioning the prospective juror. Around the rest of the conference table, she was analyzed by defense attorney Joseph Amendola, prosecutor Joseph McGettigan and even Jerry Sandusky.

"I didn't realize he would be in the room," she said.

When she received a notice in the mail in late April, Ms. Farkas, the Harris Township manager, was immediately curious. The letter detailed that she would have to be there on June 5 and 6. She quickly checked the news. Ms. Farkas would be a prospective juror for Mr. Sandusky's sexual abuse case.

"It's not something I wanted to do," she said. "I had a lot of emotions about everything that has gone on since the story broke in November."

Like 14 of the nearly 40 jurors in her pool, Ms. Farkas had connections to Penn State University. Her father, Gerry, played for Penn State in the early '60s. She graduated from there with a journalism degree and earned a master's at Penn State Harrisburg. …
