Here is how some towns in the South Hills are marking our nation's 236th birthday. Most events are on Wednesday, but some pre- activities are planned.

Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair -- A joint fireworks display will be launched at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday from the Port Authority South Hills Trolley Station behind South Hills Village, rain or shine. Details: and

Brentwood -- The borough is celebrating with a host of activities Wednesday beginning with a color ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in Brentwood Stadium. Following at 9 a.m. will be the 29th Annual Brentwood Firecracker 5K Race, which begins at Brentwood Towne Square. At 10 a.m., a fly-over will be held and a holiday parade will step off at Brownsville and Sankey avenues. Music by Alter Ego and Allegheny Brass Band will be played from 6:30-9:15 p.m. in Brentwood Stadium followed by awards for the borough's house decorating contest. The colors will be retired at 9:35 p.m. in Brentwood Stadium followed by fireworks at 9:40 p.m. Rain date for fireworks is next Thursday. Details:

Cecil -- Pre-holiday fireworks will be launched at dark Saturday near Holy Rosary Church in Muse. Details:

Dormont -- The borough is celebrating the Fourth in conjunction with its annual community day at Dormont Park on Dormont Avenue. Activities begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday and include bands, bingo, games and food vendors. Fireworks go off at 9:30 p.m. Rain date for the fireworks is next Thursday. Details:

Green Tree -- The Green Tree Athletic Association will be host to its annual Fourth of July Co-Ed Adult Softball Game at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hemlock Field. Cost is $120 for a team of up to 12 players. Proceeds benefit Operation Shoebox. Following the game, festivities continue from noon to 3 p. …
