South Side Beaver, Western Beaver Join Forces

Throughout youth baseball in Beaver County, teams from South Side Beaver and Western Beaver were constantly competing against each other. Natural rivals formed.

"We butted heads with these guys all through Little League and in tournaments," said coach Jim Beaumont who spent his time on the South Side side of the rivalry.

But when it came time to compete in Colt baseball (15-16 years old), Western Beaver, a WPIAL Class A school, and South Side Beaver, a WPIAL Class AA school, decided to join forces to have a better chance to compete in the Chartiers Valley Baseball Association (CVBA) where teams such as Chartiers Valley, Keystone Oaks, Moon, Montour, South Fayette and West Allegheny played.

"The kids meshed straight off the bat," Beaumont said. "We got two small communities looking to put together a team and we came together real nice."

As strange as the match may have seemed at first glance, it worked better than anyone could have imagined.

The Southwestern Colt team with South Side and Western Beaver high school students dominated the CVBA Colt League the past two years, winning back-to-back championships and compiling a 40-3 record over two summers.

The group's run in the Colt League came to a fitting conclusion Monday night with a 3-0 win in the championship game against Scott Blue, a team from Chartiers Valley.

"There were no egos," Beaumont said. "We were winning with a nucleus of 11 or 12 kids."

The Colt League team had backing from the high school. They used the high school field for their home games and in the long run, a successful summer program like this can help the high school team. There previously was no Colt League team in the area.

"In years past once the high school season was over, nobody was picking up a glove until March," Beaumont said of the lack of offseason leagues available to players in the area. …
