Stanford began preseason practice for the first time in five years without Andrew Luck tossing passes, leaving behind a quarterback competition that is so unclear coach David Shaw is not allowing the possible replacements for the NFL's No. 1 overall pick to even talk publicly for now.

Middle linebacker Shayne Skov practiced for the first time since he tore a ligament in the third game last season. He was also suspended during the spring following his DUI arrest in January.

Skov, who apologized for his arrest, says he's completely healthy and the Cardinal will find a way to succeed without Luck.

Coach Gary Patterson said starting quarterback Casey Pachall will not face team discipline after the junior admitted to police in February that he used marijuana and failed a drug test. Patterson said Pachall has completed drug and alcohol counseling mandated by the university and no suspension will be imposed.
