Lineman Tackles New Role on Team

One man's mistake is often another man's opportunity. At least that's the way that Pitt redshirt junior Cory King is approaching his latest assignment -- as the starting left tackle.

King was moved from guard to tackle to fill the void left by junior Juantez Hollins, who was suspended for the season for a violation of team policy late last week.

With Hollins out the mix, Pitt coaches had to scramble for another able body to plug in the spot because there weren't many options at tackle.

King, who played some tackle his freshman year, seemed to be the best fit for the job, He has played in 15 games in his career and started five -- all at guard -- last year.

He said that he's honored to have the first crack at taking over at left tackle, but he knows he has a long way to go and not a lot of time as the opener is less than a month away.

"Right now I have to focus on myself because not only is it is a new position, it is a big position," King said Monday after the first day of training camp.

"I have to do the best I can to make improvements every day, just pick one thing out every day to improve on, but this is a really big opportunity for me and I hope to take advantage of it."

King was a right tackle when he came to Pitt, but moved to guard by the middle of his freshman season and had been at that position ever since.

He said there are some differences in the positions, especially when it comes to pass blocking, but the fact that he played the left guard position last season means he has some experience with the left-handed stance.

"It is a little different playing tackle, but even today it all started coming back to me," King said.

"There is a lot of pressure on me obviously, but I think that is the best way for me to get better, to have that sense of urgency and do the best I can do. …
