ARCHERY

U.S. EARNS ITS FIRST MEDAL OF GAMES

Italy won the gold in the men's team event, beating the U.S. team by one point on the final shot. Michele Frangilli, Marco Galiazzo and Mauro Nespoli hugged and raised their hands in celebration after the final arrow beat the U.S. team, 219-218, at Lord's Cricket Ground. It was Italy's first gold in the event and America's first medal of the games. South Korea took the bronze.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

AMERICAN WOMEN, MEN START OFF STRONG

Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor, who are trying for a third consecutive gold medal, beat Australians Tamsin Hinchley and five-time Olympian Natalie Cook in the final match of pool play, 21-18, 21-19. The No. 2 U.S. men's team of Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb needed just 33 minutes to put away South Africans Freedom Chiya and Grant Goldschmidt.

CYCLING

BRITAIN'S FIRST SHOT AT GOLD IS FOILED

Favored cycling star and Britain's hope for the first gold medal, Mark Cavendish, disappointed in the men's road race with a 29th- place finish. Kazakhstan's Alexander Vinokourov won gold. Rigoberto Uran of Colombia took silver, and Alexander Kristoff of Norway surged in a mass sprint for the bronze.

GYMNASTICS

U.S. MEN IN FIRST AFTER QUALIFYING ROUND

The American men will be thrilled if they can hang on to this same spot in the gymnastics team finals. The Americans landed atop the standings. Their final score of 275.342 was almost three points ahead of resurgent Russia. Britain managed to finish in third place, and Germany was fourth. Japan, the heavy favorite coming into the meet, is fifth and China is sixth.

FENCING

MEDAL SWEEP FOR ITALIAN WOMEN

Elisa Di Francisca completed an Italian sweep of the medals at the individual foil, winning the gold, 12-11, in overtime against countrywoman Arianna Errigo. …
