Man Gets Life Sentence for Killing 90-Year-Old Relative

A Latrobe drug addict who bludgeoned his 90-year-old former grandfather-in-law to death with a tire iron last year was sentenced Thursday to life in prison over the objections of his mother, who insisted he is innocent.

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Anthony M. Mariani imposed that term on Jason Kuhns, 36, who beat Cuddy Briskin, a kindly World War II veteran, on April 5, 2011, and robbed him of his valuable coins.

The judge also sentenced him to six to 12 years for burglary and 9 1/2 to 19 years for robbery, both of which are consecutive terms.

At the time of the killing, Kuhns was married to Mr. Briskin's granddaughter, but the two were in the process of getting divorced.

Prosecutors said he stole the coins and pawned them 11 hours after Mr. Briskin's murder to fuel his drug habit.

"What you did was so outrageous, so unforgivable, not just on a legal basis, but on a human basis," the judge told Kuhns, who said nothing on his own behalf. "You've devastated everyone around you. …
