GAME 2 MATCHUP: STEELERS VS JETS [Derived Headline]

Article excerpt

GAME PLAN

When the Jets have the ball: The best thing that could have happened with QB Mark Sanchez was to have the game he did last week. Not only did it erase any concerns about an offense that scored just one TD in the preseason; it quickly quieted Tebowmania. Sanchez passed for 296 yards and three TDs against Buffalo. His top receiver is former Steelers WR Santonio Holmes, but rookie Stephen Hill had five catches for 89 yards and two TDs. RB Shonn Green, who had 96 yards, is an inside runner who is the focus of a running game that new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano seeks to improve. The offensive line is one of the best in the league and features three Pro Bowlers -- LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, C Nick Mangold and G Brandon Moore. Sanchez was not sacked and was hit just once by the Bills. The Steelers had two sacks in Denver -- both in the first half ----but they tend to get more pressure at home. Of their 35 sacks last season, 28 came at Heinz Field.

When the Steelers have the ball: The Jets defense vs. the Bills was as dominant as any in coach Rex Ryan's tenure, forcing three turnovers in the first 23 plays and intercepting Ryan Fitzpatrick three times. But, they missed a lot of tackles and allowed Bills RB C.J. Spiller to rush for 169 yards on 14 carries. Of the Bills' 195 rushing yards, 127 came after contact. The Jets are mixing a lot more 4-3 fronts into their defense, allowing rookie DE Quinton Coples to get on the field. ILBs David Harris and Bart Scott are the heart of the defense, and outside backers Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas are two of nine former No. 1 picks on defense. But the strength of the defense is in the secondary, although CB Darrelle Revis (concussion) won't play. Kyle Wilson will replace him. The Steelers had 75 yards rushing in the opener -- Jonathan Dwyer had a team-high 43 yards on nine carries -- and didn't have a run longer than 11 yards. Dwyer will get more carries against the Jets. Both RT Marcus Gilbert (knee) and RG Ramon Foster (eye) will start after leaving the Denver game with injuries.
