Three county bars closed for not paying drink tax

Three Allegheny County bars closed this week by the county sheriff will have to pay more than $43,000 in past-due drink taxes and attorney fees before they will be allowed to reopen.

The sheriff's office Wednesday shut down the Pittsburgh Cafe on Meyran Avenue in Oakland; Mad Dawgs on Saxonburg Boulevard in West Deer; and Reese's Supper Club on South Fifth Street in Duquesne.

Sheriff's Sgt. Richard Fersch said Thursday the county moves against about a dozen holders of liquor licenses each year for non- payment of the county's 7 percent drink tax.

Director of state's park system resigning

John Norbeck, director of Pennsylvania's award-winning park system for the last six years, has resigned, effective Friday.

Mr. Norbeck, 56, was appointed to head the Bureau of State Parks in June 2006 by Gov. Ed Rendell. He oversaw management of the state's 117 parks and three conservation areas covering nearly 300,000 acres, and 1,800 full- and part-time employees.

Under Mr. Norbeck's stewardship, the state's park system won the 2009-11 National Gold Medal for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management awarded by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association.

Sandusky's wife gets $50,000 bail back

A judge on Thursday granted a request by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky that the court return to his wife the $50,000 she put up for his bail before he was convicted this summer of sexually abusing nearly a dozen boys.

Judge John Cleland signed the order that refunded the bail to Dottie Sandusky and released the court's hold on the couple's home, as a promissory note against the home had been put up as $200,000 collateral.

Mr. Sandusky, 68, has been in a county jail since his June conviction on 45 counts of child sexual abuse against 10 boys, some on campus. …
