1 killed, 1 injured in crash

One person was killed and another was injured in a wreck involving several cars and a tractor-trailer on Second Avenue this morning.

The crash was reported shortly after 8 a.m. and shut down the road between Bates Street and the 10th Street Bridge.

James Kraska Jr., who was working at Metaltech on Second Avenue, said the tractor-trailer and a gold sedan were headed inbound when they collided.

The tractor-trailer veered off the road and turned onto its side. The gold sedan was pushed into oncoming traffic, where it was T- boned by a Kia sedan. The gold car went airborne and flipped onto its roof, damaging at least one other car in the process.

Squirrel Hill Tunnel to close

PennDOT again will close the inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel for construction this weekend.

The tunnel will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, and all inbound traffic will be required to form a single lane and exit at Edgewood-Swissvale.

The posted detour is via South Braddock and Forbes avenues to Squirrel Hill.

Long delays have occurred at the exit ramp and along the detour route, and PennDOT recommends that drivers consider using the Pennsylvania Turnpike as an alternate route.

U.S. Steel posts profit

U.S. Steel today reported its second straight profitable quarter, posting profit of $44 million for the third quarter, up from $22 million in the same period last year as operating costs fell.

Per-share profit was 28 cents vs. 15 cents.

Revenue for the quarter was $4.65 billion, down 8 percent from $5.08 billion.

Route 51 victim identified

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office has identified a man who died after he was struck by a vehicle in Pleasant Hills last week.

Stephen Hrubochak, 80, of Carrick, died in Jefferson Regional Medical Center after he was struck on Route 51 between the Olive Garden and Chick-fil-A on Oct. …
