Obama: With the closure of Langley and Oliver, the City League has been reduced to six teams. Obama lost to Allderdice in the City League championship a year ago, and Obama seems primed to finish on top of the heap this season. Senior guard Deandre Byrd averaged 12 points a game last season and junior forward D.J. Porter 10.

CONTENDERS

* Allderdice: Buddy Valinsky is back for his second stint as coach of the Dragons and takes over a program that has won three consecutive City League championships. Top players Justin Dobbs and Ben Mickens have graduated. Senior guard Cornelious Raye and junior forward Jay Moultrie are two returning starters.

* Perry: The Commdores had a "down" season in 2011-12, going 5- 17. They should rebound this year. Donte Marcus is a senior guard who averaged 10 points a game last season, and the team also should be helped by the infusion of a few players from Oliver, which closed in June. One of them is Shakeem Cox, who averaged 20 points at Oliver and made All-City last season. …
