Ex-Twins Reliever Signs with Pirates

The Pirates signed right-handed reliever Kyle Waldrop to a one- year, minor league contract Tuesday, which includes an invitation to spring training and a chance to compete for the major league roster.

Waldrop, 27, was selected in the first round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins, the only team for whom he has played in his professional career. After starting 2012 on the disabled list with a right elbow strain, Waldrop went 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 17 appearances with the Twins.

In 24 career appearances, Waldrop is 1-1 with a 3.62 ERA. In eight seasons in the minor leagues, Waldrop went 45-42 with a 3.60 ERA.

Starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin and the Colorado Rockies avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year, $6.5 million deal. The 25- year-old right-hander is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he went 3-5 with a 4.43 ERA. Chacin had asked for $2.6 million in arbitration and had been offered $1.7 million by the Rockies.

* Reliever Chad Durbin, 34, and the Philadelphia Phillies finalized a $1 million, one-year contract. He will receive an $850,000 salary this year, and the Phillies have a $1.5 million option for 2014 with a $250,000 buyout. Durbin was 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA and in a career-high 76 games for Atlanta last season.

* Second baseman Daniel Murphy and the New York Mets agreed to a one-year contract worth $2,925,000, avoiding salary arbitration. Murphy, 27, hit .291 with six homers and 65 RBIs last year, when he made $512,196. He had asked for $3.4 million and had been offered $2.55 million.

* Freddy Garcia, 36, and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. Garcia was 7-6 with a 5.20 ERA in 30 games, 17 starts, for the New York Yankees last year.
