PPG's Akzo Nobel buy is done

PPG Industries completed its $1.05 billion acquisition of Akzo Nobel's North American architectural coatings business. The purchase, the second largest in PPG's history, strengthens the Pittsburgh company's paint and coating business, which is expected to benefit from a revival of the U.S. housing market. The acquisition includes about 600 Akzo Nobel paint stores in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean and 23 manufacturing and distribution facilities throughout North America. The unit employs about 4,700. Akzo Nobel brands include Glidden and Liquid Nails. PPG said the Akzo Nobel unit had 2011 revenue of about $1.5 billion.

Boston Market offering ribs

Boston Market is expanding beyond its well-known rotisserie chicken offering for a new meat: ribs. The Golden, Colo.-based chain has 471 locations nationwide. Boston Market will prepare the St. Louis style pork spare ribs by smoking them, baking them and then covering them with its own brand of barbecue sauce.

Workers check Greene mine

Consol Energy has sent workers back into the Blacksville No. 2 coal mine to examine the area evacuated weeks ago after a fire idled the facility. The company said it was still unclear when production would resume at the Greene County facility, but said monitoring showed the fire to be out. Workers testing the area over the weekend are monitoring gas levels and checking electrical equipment before employees will be allowed to return to the mine, the company said.

Gas price here falls 2 cents

The cost of gasoline in Pittsburgh fell 2 cents this week, with the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded costing $3.738 per gallon. That's still about 12 cents more than the national average, which also fell about 2 cents last week, according to GasBuddy.com. The Pittsburgh average is now 20 cents cheaper than it was this time last year.
