U.S. marshals and police swept through Hancock County, W.Va., early Thursday and arrested 22 of 39 people charged in federal and state courts with trafficking in heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and oxycodone in West Virginia's northern panhandle.

Authorities were still looking for 17 defendants Thursday afternoon.

Deputy Erika Ditch, 24, of Greensburg and Leeann Wechtenhiser, 24, of Derry were arrested Wednesday night after detectives from the city's Zone 5 station in Highland Park said they watched as the two pulled into the Target parking lot in a pickup truck and sat there for several minutes.

Police wrote in a complaint that they found the two with heroin and needles.

Westmoreland County Sheriff Jonathan Held said he suspended Ms. Ditch without pay following her arrest and Ms. Ditch then turned in her resignation letter.
