Mr. Smalls Came Up Big in First Decade of Operation

It seemed like a bit of a pipe dream at first: turning the former St. Ann's Catholic Church and schoolhouse in Millvale, built in the 19th century, into a 650-capacity concert venue for national touring bands.

It didn't take long for Mr. Smalls to take off, and on its 10th anniversary owners Mike Speranzo and Liz Berlin (of Rusted Root) can look back at a stellar list of acts that have passed through the doors: among them, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Sonic Youth, Interpol, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Fall Out Boy, Ryan Adams, Animal Collective and TV on the Radio.

The Mr. Smalls enterprise, which includes a North Side recording studio and (until recently) a skatepark, has also been a home to local artists, from bands right out of the basement to Girl Talk and Anti-Flag.

Mr. Smalls is celebrating with a 10-Year Anniversary Series that continues through June 14 with Anti-Flag, the debuts of Bloc Party (Saturday), Alt-J (June 10) and Baroness (June 14), and returning favorites The Starting Line (June 2), Frank Turner (June 4), Metric (June 5) and Lotus (June 7-8). …
