Greensburg Cc Wins Title in Section 4-AA

It has been feast or famine for the Greensburg Central Catholic softball team, but luckily for the Centurions, it has more often been feast than famine.

The Centurions (10-3, 9-1) have shown the ability to score runs in droves like few teams in the WPIAL can but at times they have seen the bats go quiet as well.

In their three losses they were held to 3, 1 and 0 runs. In their wins their run totals have included numbers as high as 10, 13, 19, 19 and 22. It appears tough to explain.

On April 4 Greensburg Central Catholic scored 19 runs in a win at Brentwood but exactly two weeks later the Centurions were shut out by the same Brentwood team, 1-0.

"When one of the girls hits, they seem to follow each other," assistant coach Tom Appleby said. "But then you have some games when no one can make any contact. It makes it difficult; you don't have the same results. Luckily, in most of the games we have been able to string together hits."

Greensburg Central Catholic has overcome those "bipolar bats" to take charge of Class AA Section 4 with a 9-1 section record ahead of Brentwood (7-3), Steel Valley (7-3), South Allegheny (4-6) and Charleroi (3-7).

They are doing this all with a young roster and after losing starting pitcher Anna Marie Gatti, who transferred to Southmoreland this season for her junior year. Gatti pitched the bulk of the innings last season and helped the team advance to the WPIAL finals.

There are, however, plenty of other contributors back from a team that went 14-8 a year ago and won three WPIAL playoff games before falling, 3-2, to Deer Lakes in the WPIAL Class AA championship game.

Ninth-year coach Gary Ciarimboli welcomed back five starters this season.

Sophomore pitcher Nikki Adisey saw some innings last season and now she is the staff ace.

"Nikki is a very good athlete," Appleby said. "I have been with Nikki for years. …
