Psu Game in Ireland Set for Next Year

Article excerpt

Penn State's Ireland game against Central Florida is finally official, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel. It will be played at Croke Park in Dublin next year.

Organizers are to make an official announcement Sunday, revealing other details such as travel packages. Penn State officials did not immediately respond for comment.

The game is seen as an alternative to a bowl for Penn State, which won't be eligible for a bowl game in the next three seasons because of NCAA sanctions.

Both Penn State coach Bill O'Brien and Central Florida coach George O'Leary have Irish heritage. Also, from 1998 to 2002, O'Brien coached on O'Leary's staff at Georgia Tech.

Nittany Lions on preseason lists

Penn State running back Zach Zwinak has been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given to the college football player of the year.

Zwinak, a redshirt junior from Frederick, Md., is one of 76 players on the preseason watch list, which will be narrowed down to semifinalists Oct. 29 and three finalists Nov. 18.

Redshirt sophomore defensive end Deion Barnes was named to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation's best defensive player. Barnes, last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year, had six sacks and 10 tackles for loss last season.
