In St. Clair Dispute, Highmark Shows Its True Colors

I am writing to point out the utter hypocrisy of Highmark's board of directors and its CEO, Dr. William Winkenwerder Jr.

In a current advertising campaign ("Resolution of Highmark Board of Directors Regarding Open Access to Charitable Healthcare Institutions and Patient Choice") and in a July 7 Forum commentary by Dr. Winkenwerder ("Highmark Stands Ready to Work With UPMC"), Highmark claims to advocate for "health care access and choice." However, this apparently only applies when Highmark is trying to sway public opinion in its favor and against that of UPMC.

St. Clair Hospital, which is based in Mt. Lebanon and is an independent charitable health care organization, has been negotiating a renewal of its provider contract with Highmark since February. On June 3, St. Clair Hospital opened a new outpatient treatment facility in Peters. Highmark refuses to "credential" the new facility unless and until St. Clair Hospital signs a long-term extension of its overall provider agreement with Highmark. …
