NEW YORK - Stocks rose on Wall Street today, sending the Standard & Poor's 500 index above 1,700 points for the first time.

The S&P 500, which investors follow closely as a gauge for the rest of the market, was up 17 points at noon, or 1 percent, at 1,702.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 121 points, or 0.8 percent, to 15,621. The Dow is also at a record high. The Nasdaq composite index rose 38 points, or 1 percent, to 3,665.

All 10 industry sectors in the S&P 500 index rose, led by banks and industrial stocks.


LOS ANGELES - Charlie Chaplin's cane, costumes from "The Sound of Music" and a jacket worn by Steve McQueen in "Bullitt" have sold for several million dollars at an auction of Hollywood memorabilia.

The Los Angeles Times reports that a cane from Chaplin's "Modern Times" went for $420,000 at the auction held Sunday and Monday. That includes auction house fees.

Calabasas-based Profiles in History says the "Sound of Music" clothing went for $1.56 million, including the dress Julie Andrews wore while singing "Do-Re-Mi."

The tweed jacket from "Bullitt" fetched $720,000.

A Dorothy dress from "The Wizard of Oz" sold for $360,000, a polka dot dress worn by Lucille Ball went for $168,000, and $54,000 was the price for an outfit worn by (The Dude) - Jeff Bridges - in "The Big Lebowski."


MINNEAPOLIS - Gay couples began tying the knot in Minnesota and Rhode Island today, pushing the growing roster of places where same- sex couples can wed to more than a quarter of U.S. states.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak began presiding over his state's first sanctioned gay marriages just after midnight as 42 same-sex couples who didn't want to wait any longer filed into City Hall to make it official.

"I didn't expect to cry quite that hard," said a beaming Cathy ten Broeke, who with Margaret Miles was part of the first gay couple to be wed at City Hall.

The couple stood nearby embracing their 5-year-old son, Louie.

Hours later in Rhode Island, local officials issued the state's first marriage licenses to same-sex couples, making marriage an option for gay couples everywhere in New England.

Federico Santi and John Gacher, who have been together for 41 years, got married right after the Newport City Clerk's office opened at 8:30 a.m. They were already joined in a civil union.


LOS ANGELES - In therapy sessions, the priest confessed the shocking details he'd kept hidden for years: He had molested more than 100 boys. He had sex with male prostitutes and frequented gay strip clubs.

The admissions of the Rev. Ruben Martinez are included among nearly 2,000 pages of secret files unsealed Wednesday that were kept on priests, brothers and nuns who belonged to religious orders but were accused of child molestation while working within the Los Angeles archdiocese. …
