Man Claims Self-Defense in Fatal Stabbing, Police Say

A man accused of fatally stabbing his father-in-law in Donegal Wednesday told police he acted in self-defense, state police said today.

Michael A. Martin, 40, of Charleroi, is in the Westmoreland County Jail today on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Earl Weygandt, 67.

At a press conference today at the state police barracks in Greensburg, officials said they are still investigating a motive for the killing.

Trooper Stephen Limani said Mr. Weygandt was stabbed nine times and suffered three severe wounds to the throat with a "sharp instrument," which investigators have not found.

Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck said there were "issues" between Mr. Weygandt and his son-in-law but that investigators don't understand the motivation for the slaying yet.

"This was an extremely violent crime with the intent to kill the victim," Mr. Peck said.

Trooper Limani said Mr. Weygandt told the security officer at Roaring Run campground, where he lived, that he was going to meet his son-in-law who called about car trouble. …
