Post-Gazette TV writer Rob Owen answers reader questions online every Friday in Tuned In Journal blog at post-gazette.com/tv. Here's a selection of recent queries.

Q: Several years ago there also was a weekly series "Las Vegas" on NBC starring James Caan, then Tom Selleck. It was highly watched but canceled without explanation. Do you know why?

Rob, Eagan, Minn.

Rob: Because at the end it was no longer highly watched.

Q: Why is Fox running two "Masterchef" episodes a night? Are they trying to burn this series off? That would be a shame; I've come to enjoy it.

Billy, 29, Squirrel Hill

Rob: When a reality show works, the network has a tendency to run it into the ground (see: "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" on ABC). So "Masterchef" will continue in its current pattern until September and a spinoff, "Junior Masterchef" featuring kid contestants, will air this fall.

Per a Fox publicist: "The current season of 'Masterchef' will air all summer long into September. We recently announced that the season finale will air on Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. Additionally, we have already ordered two more seasons of 'Masterchef.' "

Q: Has David Letterman started working only four nights per week? There seem to be repeats on Friday nights.

Gerda, Annandale, Va.

Rob: Letterman went to a four-day work week in the summer several years ago.

So, if you wanted to watch something on an unfamiliar channel, you just looked up the name. Unfortunately, every other cable provider has only offered channel guides sorted by number, which is every bit as useful as a phone book sorted by phone number. Can you think of any earthly reason for them to be so obdurate about this?

Steve, Anoka, Minn.

Rob: I can't say this is something I've ever given much thought to or been bothered by. …
