An upbeat Tony Stewart said he views his broken right leg as "a small bump in the road" and believes he's on pace to return to racing in time for next year's Daytona 500.

The three-time NASCAR champion made his first appearance Tuesday in Kannapolis, N.C., since his Aug. 5 injury in a sprint car crash in Iowa. He had two surgeries on a broken tibia and fibula and has been recovering at home for almost a month.

Stewart used a wheelchair to get around Stewart-Haas Racing before sliding into a chair on the stage for his news conference. It's the first significant injury for the 42-year-old owner/driver of SHR, who saw his streak of 521 consecutive starts come to an end.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

NCAA tournament teams Oklahoma and Colorado and defending NIT champion Baylor will play their season openers as part of a tip-off tripleheader. The Tip-Off Showcase is Nov. 8 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Oklahoma will play Alabama, Baylor will take on Colorado and SMU will face TCU.

* Blue II, the English bulldog mascot who gained national fame during Butler's run to the men's basketball championship games in 2010 and 2011, died at the age of 9 of congestive heart failure.

* The NCAA denied forward Rakeem Buckles' appeal for a waiver request to play this season after following coach Richard Pitino from Florida International to Minnesota. Buckles played three seasons at Louisville under Pitino's father, Rick. But he had two torn ACLs and sat out last season after transferring to FIU.
