Woman charged with cruelty, assault

A Perry South woman was being held in the Allegheny County Jail Sunday on charges that she hit her neighbor's dog in the head with a piece of lumber, severely injuring the small animal.

Pittsburgh police were called to the 2000 block of Drum Street about 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

A woman told officers she threatened her neighbor with a piece of lumber, police said. Then she struck the dog in the head, causing it to instantly collapse, according to a criminal complaint.

When officers arrived, the 20-pound dog was seizing and bleeding profusely. The assistant director at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society on Western Avenue told officers "the dog was in very critical condition" and would likely need to be euthanized, according to the complaint.

Police also wrote that when they went into Ms. Luster's apartment, they found two loaded handguns, a marijuana blunt and two marijuana glass pipes within reach of two young children who were inside. …
