Police Say Man, Shot by Security Guard, Charged with Theft

The Allegheny County district attorney's office will review a Wednesday shooting in which police said an armed security guard shot a man who stole money from a truck parked in Homewood.

Shortly before 3 p.m., someone called 911 to report that a man had been shot in the 7300 block of Hamilton Avenue. When police arrived, they spoke to John Carter, 53, of Verona, a security guard for Triangle Candy & Tobacco Co., which had parked a truck nearby.

Mr. Carter told police he was in the back of company's truck when he heard a noise and saw a man run behind the truck, reach in, grab a white plastic bag of money and run off.

The man who grabbed the money, later identified as Andrew Ferguson, 21, reached into his waistband and Mr. Carter fired his gun, police said.

Mr. Ferguson fell to the ground and the money in the plastic bag scattered. He got up, ran by another business and was later found by police near a home on nearby Tioga Street. A witness had given him towels to put pressure on his wounds. …
