Coming off his worst year, Jeff Overton opened the new PGA Tour season on a good note.

Once he finally made a putt Thursday in the Open in San Martin, Calif., Overton felt as if he couldn't miss. Over the final 11 holes at CordeValle, he made three birdie putts from more than 25 feet and a 20-foot eagle putt when his gamble paid off on the par-5 ninth.

He finished with a tap-in birdie on the 18th for a 7-under 64 and a one-shot lead.

"It really helps if you can get off to a good start," Overton said. "It would be great if we can continue this thing and keep it rolling."

Alviro Quiros' knowledge of his home course was of little advantage as six others tied the 2008 champion for the lead after the first round of the Portugal Masters on the European Tour. All seven shot 6-under 65s, four of them finishing their rounds with birdies on their last holes at Oceanico Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura, Portugal.

* Michael McCoy won the U.S. Mid-Amateur for his first USGA title, routing Bill Williamson, 8 and 6, in the 36-hole final at the Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham, Ala. ... Julia Potter won the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Biltmore Forest in Asheville, N.C., beating Margaret Shirley in 19 holes to become the first left- hander to win a USGA female event.


Roger Federer was dealt another early exit by Gael Monfils, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, in the third round of the Shanghai Masters. The 17- time Grand Slam champion, who has slipped to No. 7 in the rankings, was playing in his first tournament since losing in the fourth round of the U.S. Open.

* Second-seeded Sloane Stephens needed 2 1/2 hours to defeat Andrea Petkovic of Germany, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-3, and top-seeded Angelique Kerber cruised past Alexandra Cadantu of Romania, 6-1, 6- 0, in just 50 minutes as both reached the quarterfinals of the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria. …
