CMU sets startup record

Thirty-six startup companies were created at Carnegie Mellon University this year, a record number, the school said Wednesday.

Earnings

* The ExOne Company reported a third quarter loss that was much smaller than a year-ago, but a performance that fell shy of analyst expectations. The North Huntingdon 3-D printing company said it lost $224,000, or 2 cents per share, during the quarter vs. a loss of $5.9 million in the year-ago quarter, before ExOne became a publicly traded company. Revenue increased 36 percent to $11.6 million.

* FAB Universal, formerly known as Wizzard Software, reported third quarter net income of $7.3 million, or 35 cents per share, on revenue of $29.8 million vs. a loss of $5 million, or 51 cents per share, and revenue of $1.7 million in the year-ago quarter. The improvement was attributed to the September 2012 acquisition of Digital Entertainment International, a Hong Kong company that sells video games, movies, books and other digital content to Chinese consumers. …
